The Guo Kexin Materials Characterization Center is a key component of the shared technical support platform of the Liaoning Materials Laboratory. The center is positioned as a national-level fundamental characterization platform for research and technological innovation in materials science. It focuses on the cross-scale behavior of materials—from the atomic scale and micro/nano scale to the macroscopic scale—and centers on the characterization and evaluation of material composition, microstructure, physical and chemical properties, mechanical performance, and service behavior. The center aims to build a comprehensive “one-stop” analytical and testing platform that features advanced facilities, leading technologies, efficient operations, and open sharing. It consists of three major testing platforms: Structural Research, Physicochemical Analysis, and Macroscopic Testing.
1.Structural Research Platform (Electron Microscopy Center):
This platform focuses on the study of material microstructures and cutting-edge characterization technologies, with the goal of becoming a national hub for research on the microstructure of matter and the development of electron microscopy technologies. The center features a 2,400-square-meter high-resolution imaging equipment support system, providing a stable environment for 32 high spatiotemporal resolution electron microscopy instruments, including aberration-corrected electron microscopes, field-emission transmission electron microscopes, and 3D atom probes.
2.Physicochemical Analysis Platform:
Dedicated to analyzing the physical properties and chemical composition of materials, this platform supports studies under extreme conditions such as ultra-low temperature, strong magnetic fields, high pressure, and in-situ environments. It also enables comprehensive elemental analysis, including hydrogen detection. The first-phase construction covers approximately 1,200 square meters and includes the acquisition of over 30 advanced precision analytical instruments. The goal is to establish a national-level integrated platform for routine testing, methodological innovation, instrument development, standards formulation, external services, technical training, and consulting.
3.Macroscopic Testing Platform:
This platform conducts conventional macroscopic testing and analysis of materials, including metallographic analysis, failure analysis, phase analysis, non-destructive testing, and mechanical performance testing (e.g., material strength, fatigue, fracture toughness), along with sample preprocessing and fabrication. The initial construction area is about 1,500 square meters, equipped with over 90 sets of instruments, aiming to create a professional and efficient one-stop solution for traditional material testing and analysis.
The Guo Kexin Materials Characterization Center is now operational. It will provide strong technical support for the laboratory’s disruptive technology R&D platforms and is open to enterprises and universities both within and outside the province, promoting resource sharing, supporting technological innovation in industry, and contributing to national and regional industrial and technological advancement.
